Going the Distance! (AZ) On September 11, The Arizona Department of Corrections hosted their first annual Tucson Special Olympics Bicycle Tour. Tucson’s Police Department already hosts the Law Enforcement Torch Run that benefits Special Olympics each year, and Chaplain Steve Young felt this would be another fun way to contribute to the cause. The event had many participants, including several Special Olympians themselves. All participants were given event T-shirts to wear on the ride. Several sponsors contributed to the event, and their names were displayed on the shirts. |

Helping the Cause On October 16, 2004, three members from Acumen Inc.’s Mesa, Arizona Customer Service Department took part in a car wash to help raise money for breast cancer research. The car wash was on a “donation” basis, and in the four hours that the group participated, they were able to raise three hundred dollars for |

| The event took place in Ahwatukee, Arizona at a local Burger King Restaurant. Having it in such a public place made it easier to reach out to the community and persuade people to donate money for such a worthy cause. Daviena Schauer, Customer Service Manager, had wanted to help a friend of hers whose mother was lost to the disease. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Danielle Auer and Brian Leland, Customer Service Representatives, were quick to pitch in to help. When asked about why he thought participating in the car wash was important, Brian said, "I feel that raising the money to benefit breast cancer helped the cause, and I look forward to participating in more charity work in the future." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| My Friend, Paula | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Paula Daniele, a dear friend and co-worker at Acumen, Inc., passed away December 13, 2004. Michelle Lampe, a very close friend of Paula’s, shares with us a little bit of Paula as she knew her. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The first time I met Paula was around August 10, 1998. I was having my two-hour interview with Robert Sasso. He brought Paula in to meet me. With her long blonde hair, blue eyes, and big smile, I knew immediately we would hit it off. I was hired, and Paula and I shared an office ever since. Like a “mom” to me, Paula was also a confidant to others. I would tell her things; ask for her opinion--before I would even talked to my own mom. She had this way of looking at the positive side to everything, no matter the situation. I asked a few people what came to their mind when |

they thought of Paula, and the one trait that came up the most was how very strong she was in her faith. Not only did she help us get through our own problems, but her faith helped us to deal with her being sick and the possibility of her dying. Paula was unselfish and made you feel important. She would stop what she was doing to listen to you or she would ask about your life--no matter her own situation. I know I speak for everyone that knew Paula, when I say she will be missed. For me, it has been a little more difficult since we were practically a “couple,” sharing an office eight hours a day for six and a half years. I know, however, that she is in a better place, cancer free, with all her long blonde hair back! |
