Tamera Dalton, who has Cerebral Palsy, has been with Acumen from July 2002 to the present.
She tells us that she is very happy with her program she runs utilizing Acumen’s services. In fact, she is one of our biggest cheerleaders. Included in some of the many speaking engagements she attends (since 1994), Tamera has spoken highly of how Acumen allows her to run her own program. Recently, she has been to such places as Washington, Minnesota, California, Nevada, and soon Oregon.
She tells us that running her own program involves many things, such as hiring, training, and if necessary, firing staff; training her beloved dog (“Tate”); taking care of (including remodeling) her home; and maintenance on her van.
When asked how she felt people with disabilities are treated today and whether or not it has changed from the past, Tamera stated that she does think it has changed from the past. She believes that people with disabilities are more included in the community, but added “It could still improve though. I believe it is slowly getting better and will continue to improve over time.”
Not only does Tamera keep busy with her speaking commitments, Tamera serves on the board for the Utah Division of Services for People with Disabilities (DSPD). She has been on the board from 2001 to present. Tamera says, “As the first person with a cognitive disability to serve on this board, I feel this is an important step in policy and decision-making.”
